Chiropractic Treatment Can Alleviate Sciatica

Unfortunately, many people will experience sciatic nerve pain during their lifetimes, and several of them will rely on medication to help ease their symptoms. By visiting West Buffalo Chiropractic, our chiropractor will treat the cause of sciatica and not just the symptoms.

.

What is Sciatica?

Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back and through your buttocks before branching off into each leg. A herniated disc or bone spur in the lower back can typically cause the vertebrae to press on this nerve, leading to some numbness and pain in the affected leg. Some tingling and muscle weakness is also common in sciatica, and may cause your leg to feel as though it is giving out.

Most people notice sciatic nerve pain only on one leg. However, it is possible to experience it on both legs simultaneously. When the condition affects both legs, it can make walking and standing extremely difficult.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain?

As mentioned, sciatica often results from a herniated disc or bone spur in the lower back. Another condition known as spinal stenosis, or a narrowing of the spinal canal, may put pressure on the sciatic nerve as well.

You may also experience this condition if you suffer from a degenerative disc disease. In this case, the rubbery discs surrounding the vertebrae may lose some of their cushioning abilities, thereby, making the nerves more susceptible to damage.

Certain sciatic nerve triggers include:

  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Being overweight
  • Wearing high-heeled shoes on a regular basis
  • Pregnancy

Safe, Effective Treatment to Reduce Pain

Chiropractic care is especially effective at reducing or eliminating sciatic nerve pain. Through a series of gentle adjustments, our chiropractor realigns the spinal column to take pressure off of the sciatic nerve. In many cases, this method allows people to reduce the amount of medication they take or forego using drugs altogether. The adjustments take only a few minutes of your time and will enable you to return to your normal activities in no time.
